According to figures recently released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), Torremolinos was the Costa del Sol’s most popular resort with tourists during the month of May.
The hotel occupancy survey conducted by the INE revealed 11.12% growth in tourist numbers visiting Torremolinos during May compared to the same month in 2017. Additionally the number of overnight hotel stays in the town grew 7.8%, the sharpest increase witnessed since 2008.
In total more than 111,401 tourists visited the Costa del Sol resort during the 31 day period. More than 490,000 overnight hotel stays were recorded with guests staying on average 4.5 nights.
Of all the tourists to visit the town, 35% (30,792) were from elsewhere in Spain, the greatest number of overseas visitors were from the UK (22,537), followed by visitors from France (12,590).
Marbella was the second most popular Costa del Sol resort during May receiving a total of 81,071 visitors, next on the list came Benalmádena receiving 63,829 visitors.
The resort has now witnessed record tourist numbers every month so far this year and is subsequently also reporting increased growth in employment created by the tourism industry.
