The planned 115 million Euro designer outlet development to be located adjacent to the Plaza Mayor shopping and entertainment centre has taken a major step forward after the license for works was granted by Málaga cities planning department. Both Civil Aviation and the Department for the Environment, who were previously opposed to the project due to its proximity to the airport and risk of flooding, dropped their objections in June.
Situated on the outskirts of the City and serving the Costa del Sol, Plaza Mayor is already Málaga’s most visited shopping centre with over 10 million local and international shoppers every year. The new designer outlet, the first in southern Spain, will occupy 30,000 sq. metres of retail space offering a mixture of over 170 international and local branded stores all offering 30% – 70% discounts.
The McArthurGlen Group behind the project already own 22 designer outlets close to key destinations in nine different countries with another due to open in early 2017, making Málaga it 24th centre and its first in Spain. When fully developed the centre is expected to generate over 1,000 new jobs and boost the local economy for suppliers in the region.
Easily accessible with direct train links to Málaga and Fuengirola and adjacent to the motorway providing rapid access to Mijas Costa, Marbella and the rest of the Costa del Sol, the developers will also be constructing a new 1,122 space car park underneath the centre to cope with the inevitable rise in customers.
In addition to the new stores offering the worlds finest names in luxury, premium and designer fashion, the centre will also house a number of bars and restaurants surrounding a central plaza with landscaped walkways, dancing fountains and children’s play areas inspired by the local design and style of the Andalucían region.
Construction of the project is expected to last 18 months with all services open to the public in 2018.
