Receiving over 7 million visitors who in turn spent in excess of 7 billion Euros, the Costa del Sol has enjoyed its best summer season ever.
According to figures released by Turismo Costa del Sol and the province’s hotel association, the number of visitors to the Costa del Sol between June to September of 2017 totalled over 7 million, representing 5.2% growth compared to the same period last year, itself a record year.
Whilst for some people busier may not always mean better, the increased visitor numbers experienced on the Costa del Sol led to 8% growth in employment with 112,000 extra workers in the tourism sector and over 7.15 billion Euro’s being spent in the region over the summer months.
During the same months the number of travellers choosing to stay in hotels grew 1.8% whilst those opting for the increasingly popular private rented accommodation grew an impressive 18.4%. Málaga airport also recorded its best ever summer period with over 4.1 million passenger arrivals.
Despite a weakened pound the largest source of visitors was the UK with 1.4 million Brits arriving on the Costa del Sol this summer, an increase of 7% compared to 2016. The highest level of growth cane from elsewhere with Swedish visitors increasing 46%, the Netherlands 36% and Italy 27% with Denmark and Germany both seeing increases of 19%.
Forecasts for the traditionally slower summer are also looking positive with figures from Málaga airport predicting a 12% year on year increase in arrivals between November to January.
