Málaga has been chosen amongst twenty nominees to compete for the title of Best European Destination 2019.
Described by the organisers, European Best Destinations, as “A unique destination in Europe… a city that leaves no one indifferent”, Málaga was chosen according to the nominee criteria; A city “combining tradition and modernity, gastronomy, the beach and culture along with a world-class selection of museums”.
Easily accessible with most European cities only a few hours flight away, the capital of the Costa del Sol has something for everyone and is becoming extremely popular with holidaymakers and property investors. Málaga’s cobbled streets are a maze of tapas bars, boutique stores and high street retailers only a few minutes walk from the cities renovated port area, itself home to chic stores and an array of international eateries. Sitting between two long sandy beaches and promenades lined with chiringuitos, the port is a regular destination for some of the world’s largest cruise liners during their voyages around the Mediterranean.
With a long and varied history Málaga is also famous for its culture, festivals, vibrant arts scene, its many museums and art galleries, fortress and alcazaba and cathedral; The Catedral de la Encarnación, known affectionately by locals as La Manquita (the little one armed lady) due to its incomplete south tower, is steeped in religious art and is one of Andalucía’s most recognisable landmarks.
Málaga faces some tough competition in its bid for the title with well established tourist destinations such as Vienna, Rome, Lisbon and Edinburgh amongst the twenty nominees. Alongside the title, previous winning destinations have reported increased tourism and media coverage, typically 15% and 80% respectively according to the organisers.
With the eventual winner decided through an online voting process early next year, the Málaga tourist department has launched a campaign to encourage people to vote for the city as Best European Destination 2019. We will publish details of how to vote for Málaga city as they become available.
