Addressing members of the British Chamber of Commerce in Marbella, Simon Manley, the British ambassador to Spain, moved to reassure those in attendance that the relationship between the UK and Spain would not be damaged by Brexit.

The ambassador expressed confidence that the Costa del Sol’s tourism industry would not suffer following the UK’s exit from the EU, reminding his audience of Spain’s 18 million visitors from the UK in 2016, a record figure that is expected to be smashed this year. He then went on to point out that the UK is the third largest investor into Spain, that the British Embassy in Madrid is working on building further relationships between the two countries, particularly in terms of  aviation ties, sustainable energy production and telecommunications.

Speaking at a forum themed ‘Brexit and beyond’ concerning the future of the UK and Spain following Brexit, Mr Manley remarked the Costa del Sol “holds a special place in the hearts of the British” and went on to assure that the British government would continue to safeguard the rights of British citizens in the EU along with businesses already established in Spain, commenting that “It is our objective to make sure that the extraordinary relationship between the two countries continues to prosper”.

Taking time out to visit the English cemetery in Málaga, he explained that meetings with expats and representative groups are to understand their concerns as the UK government prepares for negotiations to leave the European Union, commenting “we want to work with Spanish authorities at the national, regional and local level to ensure Brits can continue to live and buy property here” adding “from Prime Minister Rajoy down, through to presidents of regional governments – all of them tell me they value the presence of Britons here in Spain”.
